Wellness is more than just a trendy word that is currently being applied to innumerable products and services. So, what is wellness? It’s a philosophy, a way of life, a choice. It is about achieving enduring health and vitality; creating a life that you love to live; and making choices that are in the best interest of the health and wellbeing of yourself, others and the environment.
For too long we have looked outside of ourselves for answers and magic pills, and freely given our power to others. To embark upon your personal wellness journey, the first step is self-responsibility.
Begin by acknowledging that your health is your responsibility; the choices that you make on a daily basis are your choices.
For example, let’s say you had a long and extremely stressful day at work yesterday – did you soldier on throughout the day letting the stress build, or did you acknowledge the stress and take short breaks to breathe and centre yourself, or take short walks to release tension?
Did you come home and keep working or vegetate on the couch? Or were you proactive in releasing the day’s tension through exercise, meditation, a long bath, or whatever works for you? Do you know what works for you? If not, start compiling a list of things that relax you and bring you joy.
Let’s say you chose to let the stress build and then come down with a cold; do you choose to pump your body full of medications and go back to work, or pay attention to the messages from your body, stay home to take care of yourself and give your body time to heal?
Do you choose the sugar-laden foods or the healthy ones that will nourish you back to health?
Every decision we make has consequences; by bringing mindfulness to our daily decisions, we can begin making choices aligned with our own wellness. The more we learn to choose wellness with the little decisions, the easier it becomes with the bigger ones.
